A Different Mother reflects Rena Trefman Cobrinik’s life in an immigrant family. As little girl, growing up in the Bronx during the Great Depression and World War II, she didn’t recognize the desperation or poverty. She leaned back in the comfort of Yiddish spoken at home. Struggle was a positive energy. Outsmarting life was the bottom line to many family stories.
But as she grew older, as an adult responsible for her mother’s end - of - life needs, she would learn that the most amazing parts of the stories had been left out. In A Different Mother, she traces them to very personal and surprising revelations.

Having taken care of my mom in her last years, and cared for her with Hospice at home, I could really relate to this book. I could also relate to the Yiddish family of immigrants as that's my dad's family.Well written, insightful, compassionate.

A Different Mother eBook Rena Trefman Cobrinik Reviews
Rena's words spin a story of my early years.and of a woman whose zest and taste for life have been brought back to life by her daughter's loving words. I read the entire book the day I received it. Muriel Haber
I appreciated and enjoyed reading the book, and believe Bashevis Singer also would have appreciated and enjoyed reading the author's loving (and interesting) portrait of her mother.
beautifully written, i would love to see it as a documentary / film / play, very talented author
Rena Trefman Cobrinik's eye for visual description and her ear and eye for nuanced detail make this book a pleasure to read. Rena paints pictures in my mind as she reveals stories of her mother, an exceptional woman even at the end of her eventful life.
This a great "Joy Luck" club spanning 3 generations of women, unveiled secrets and the complexities of the multi-cultural effects in an immigrant family - struggling with modern times. Secrets revealed and rationalizations - all written like an old Russian tale. Layered.
This is the loving memoir of a daughter and the challenges she faces as she learns of, and comes to terms with, some surprising revelations while helping her fiercely independent mother face her declining years in a nursing home. There is so much emotion in this book. The author has captured the confusion, uncertainty, fear, and pain that anyone who has ever dealt with settling an elderly parent in a nursing home experiences.. But there is at times a sense of joy as the author's mother continues to retain control over her life, both past and present. Underlying this is a powerful story about coming to terms with a past and a mother that you discover you never really knew or understood. Ultimately, this is a story about love, learning, and acceptance. It is beautifully written.
From the first chapter I was intrigued by this story of family relationships and drama. Ms. Cobrinik writes from the heart, making her story warm and bitter-sweet. Her portrait of her mother, Anna, is fascinating and conveys a sort of universal immigrant story of a proud, hard-working and determined woman.
Having taken care of my mom in her last years, and cared for her with Hospice at home, I could really relate to this book. I could also relate to the Yiddish family of immigrants as that's my dad's family.
Well written, insightful, compassionate.
Thank you.
